駅訳®

「日本の駅名の意味と由来が英語でわかる路線図」です。

海外で、慣れない言語の駅名を読むのはひと苦労。駅名にどんな意味があるのか、思いを馳せる余裕もなかなかありません。

それは訪日外国人にとっても同じこと。

“Tsukishima” “Yurakucho” と字面を見ても多くの人は意味がわかりません。

しかし、駅名はその土地の歴史・文化・地理・地形、

そこに生きてきた人々の生活が色濃く反映されたいわば知識という豊かな観光資源。

たとえば、

「渋谷」は Refined Valley

「赤坂」は Red Hill

「新橋」は New Bridge

「秋葉原」は Field of Autumn Leaves

「人形町」は Doll Town

「有楽町」は Pleasure Townなどなど。

まずは東京の地下鉄を中心に主な路線をカバーしました。

各駅の◯を押してみてください。英訳された駅名とその名の由来が出てきます。（日本語バージョンは今後！）

右下にあるEKIYAKUという赤いボタンを押すと路線図全体が駅訳バージョンに。

駅名の意味や由来を目にすることで知らない土地が、知りたい目的地になる。駅名が、旅の新しい物語を紡いでいく…そんなことを妄想しながらチームで作り上げました。

私の個人的なお気に入りは「日暮里」の Twilight Hamlet です。

最後に。

駅名を英訳する試みは複数の人によって以前から行われています。

その中の一つとして、2020年には英語版の鉄道路線図がテレビで紹介されたこともありました（正直、ヒヤッとしました）。

しかし弊社はこのプロジェクトを2018年に独自に構想して制作を始め、一貫して他の類例は参照していません。

弊社事業の中心的なコンセプトである「トランスクリエーション」を駅名に当てはめてみようという着想から生まれたものです。

駅名の英訳はこれらが「正解」では決してありません。もっとふさわしいアイデアがあれば、どんどん改良していきます。本プロダクトを通して、多くの人とアイデアを交換しながら、より良い国際文化交流になることを私たちは心から願っています。

Today, Morph is proud to launch a project we’ve been working on for some time.It’s called EkiYaku.For anyone visiting Tokyo that doesn’t understand Japanese, the station map is made up of strings of letters that have no discernible meaning.Yet beneath that map – crowded with letters like a word search with no words to find – is a treasure trove of meaning: historical, cultural, geographical, topographical.About heroes and villains, folklore and spirituality, how people lived and live.All we need is to be able to see it. That’s why we made EkiYaku. Like a magic looking-glass – we hope it will help peel back the curtain and give people a better sense of connection to a wonderful city. To learn something about the place you’re visiting, simply by reading the station name.We’re certainly not the first to consider this challenge, or to translate station names – literally or creatively.
